Results 17th March 2010

Today one table did not record the score after playing the hand; and one board was unplayable by another table after it was found that the curtain cards had been replaced in the wrong slots during the previous round. The blame for this second error is not to be laid wholly at the door of North - it was clear that the board had been removed from the table during the play of the hand, which is against the rules, and E/W could have objected to this, or at least made certain that the curtain cards were replaced properly. In both cases a small matchpoint fine was imposed.

Unfortunately it was discovered that the traveller for Board 1 could not be found. A thorough search has been carried out without success, and so Board 1 could not be scored. If anyone finds the traveller amongst their papers, etc, I would be glad to have it. Needless to say, there would be no penalty, just gratitude that the event could be scored properly.

This is not a unique occurrence - many years ago, at another club, a traveller went missing and it was generally believed that a player who had got a bottom had taken it home with him, ensuring he and his partner would get at least an average score for that board.{\ ==================================================================================

You will make life easier for the scorer if you (a) record your result in the correct place on the traveller (b) don't write anything on the traveller if you happen to be sitting out for those boards (c) if you are determined to write on the traveller, don't put 'passed out' when you mean 'sat out'; they mean very different things (d) do make sure the result of the hand you have just played is scored on the traveller. Two pairs got an 'average minus' score on one board for not recording it.

Therre are several positives, however. Nobody has played the wrong boards, or played them the wrong way round, for a long time; and generally speaking the speed of play is satisfactory.

Six full tables today. A little nagging to begin with: it's very important to double-check the travellers. After filling in the result, North should show it to East who should check it carefully, not merely the score at the end but to ascertain that the pair numbers are correct. Too often they are not, which makes extra work for the scorer. Another thing that has happened in two successive weeks is that one table has failed to record a score at all. I have given both pairs a below-average score for this board and shall continue to do so whenever it happens in the future.

A good turnout of 7 tables on our first session in the Community Hall, which proved a spacious and comfortable venue for the Club.

There is more work, however, in shifting the trestle tables and putting up our own bridge tables and chairs in place - and replacing everything at the end of the afternoon. We would ask all members to arrive early -1.20 pm at the latest - to help with the setting up, and to stay at the end until the job is done.

Revised scores for 27th January 2010

On Wednesday 27th Jan, three boards were inadvertently played the wrong way round. The scoring programme I have been using did not allow this to be catered for in the scoring, so - as a temporary measure - I scored the boards as 'spoiled' (i.e. they could not be played) and both pairs were awarded averages. However, I've now contacted the programme writer, Jeff Smith, who told me that the programme has now been updated and pair numbers can now be changed on the score sheet. So I have uploaded the latest programme and rescored the event, and you will notice some differences.

I hope the fact that this kind of mistake can now be corrected will not encourage members to sit in the wrong seats!{\rtf1\ansi\deff0{\fonttbl{\f0\fnil\fcharset0 Courier New;}}

I'd ask players - especially Norths - to take a bit more care when they fill in the travellers - checking that they've entered the pair numbers correctly and scored the right side. Things had started to improve but now seem to be going downhill again.

Something that affects many bridge clubs these days is slow play. It's rather disappointing for a director to find that when he comes to ask pairs to move, at one table they are putting down dummy for the last board. In future, if the time is up for a particular round and at one table (or more) players still haven't started to play the hand, then that board will have to be taken away and players will receive an average score. When other pairs are moving and one table is still playing a hand from the previous round, there's a chance that one pair might sit down at a vacant (but wrong) table.
